UEFA to investigate Croatian football chief over ‘gay ban’

UEFA is to investigate the president of the Croatian Football Federation after he said he would not allow gay players on the national team.

The governing body for football in Europe will decide whether Vlatko Markovic broke rules relating to discrimination and football officials’ decent conduct, AP reports.

A disciplinary panel will hear the case on November 25th.

Earlier this month, the former footballer told Croatian newspaper Vecernji List: “While I’m a president of the Croatian Football Federation, there will be no homosexuals playing in the national team.”

He also said that only “normal people” play football.

Last week’s battle of the titans between Barcelona and Real Madrid was dubbed “The most expensive match ever”. Indeed the La Liga bout featured two of the most expensive players in football club history (C.Ronaldo and Kaka) as well as a field (and bench) of world class players in all positions worth well into their double-figured millions. The 2007/2008 season was filled with plenty of surprises such as the cutting out of Arsenal in the beginning, the ‘rebirth’ of Chelsea, the real race between the Big Four dominants that we know, and many others. The 1992/1993 season received its fame for being the first season of the Premier League, with 22 clubs at the initial stage and the first ever goal by Brian Deane from Sheffield United in a surprising 2-1 victory against Manchester United. The 2005/2006 season was equally memorable for a couple of reasons; one of the most famous being Manchester United’s 1,000th goal in this league with Cristiano Ronaldo’s that ended the match against Middlesbrough in 4-1.

Football leagues are all around the world, taking turns to rule the modern media over a specified period of seasons; but sometimes, too many versions of the same may tend to be really confusing for the newbies. Among the most famous football leagues around the world would include the English Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, the American National Football League, the Spanish La Liga, and the Italian Football league (divided into Lega Calcio and Lega Pro).

On the American shores, the National Football League rules the floor for American football; and likewise in Spain and Italy, their respective national football leagues are equally famous and important as well.
